Recently, I had a check in with my business coach, Natasha Allrich.

“What’s up with you, Deb? Tell me about what’s going on with you personally before we talk business.” She said. (I love Natasha for this very reason – she is so soulful and centered and sees the big picture of life as an entrepreneur – and it’s not just about business.)

“It’s so funny,” I said “but my business and personal life feel very connected right now. My business is growing exponentially. Everyone I speak with is becoming a new client – literally my close rate is 100%! I’m looking forward to a very full program in January.” I told her.

“One of my biggest inspirations is this new relationship” I continued “This new man in my life is so positive and so focused on creating new opportunities in his life that I feel inspired just by being with him, and he feels inspired by me… it’s like we are leveling up each other!”

“MmmHmm, iron sharpens iron.” She said with a wise knowing, “it’s from the bible.”

“Iron sharpens iron?” I thought… then the light bulb when on…“Yes, of course! Iron sharpens iron!” I answered.

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17

I mentioned this to my partner that evening. “I was talking about what you and I have been experiencing together in our businesses and she said ‘iron sharpens iron’ and it made so much sense to me.”

“I can’t believe you just said that,” he said, “my grandfather used to say that to me all the time. He owned a very successful business and would say, ‘You are only as good as the people who work for you and if you sit down and talk with them, you can learn a lot about your business from them. Iron sharpens iron.’ ” We sat stunned for a moment – absorbing the deep truth of this understanding.

Since then, those words have not left my mind.

I’ve started to notice how “iron sharpens iron” is true in all areas of my life; with my clients, with the women I speak with, even with my friends.

We are here to sharpen each other – to help each other become better individuals, better leaders, to be better at just being who we are and enjoying ourselves!

Every manager is here to sharpen the skills of those on her team, and in turn be sharpened by those employees. If she’s wise, she’ll also notice that what she is called to teach others are the same skills she needs to sharpen in herself. Every coach knows this as well. It’s what keeps us focused and on top of our game.

Every time you and I have a conversation, or share concepts like this through this blog, we are like iron tools honing each other for the next engagement; making each other sharper, stronger, improving performance, becoming experts at this game called life. This makes perfect sense to me. Is it making sense to you too?

If so, I invite you to participate in my upcoming free mini course – Fierce & Fabulous Over 40 – A new roadmap for courageous women looking for what’s next. “Iron sharpens iron” in this live collaboration.
