So you’ve had this idea for a while now. This consistent tug at your heart or voice in your head. This big “what if…?”

It doesn’t matter if you are already doing your own thing as an entrepreneur, or still working for a company, if you are an entrepreneur at heart, it’s impossible to stop thinking up new things to try.

But… how can you tell if your new idea will work?

Just this week I was chatting with a woman who already made the leap. She left her corporate engineering job about 15 years ago She’s super smart and super creative.

While in college, a friend of hers lured her into juggling as a way of picking up some extra cash. Little did she know that decades later she’d be making money speaking and entertaining corporate audiences using juggling as a metaphor for how we balance work and life. She helps clients become better at delegating and knowing what to do when balls drop (as they inevitably do).

And, she’s a super successful speaker.

But she’s also a new mom and speaking gigs keep her on the road away from her two-year-old.

She wants to home school her boy – they can spend more time together and she can give him a better education than he can get in their local school.

She also has a big idea about helping other moms home school their kids and not feel so isolated in the process.

Her face literally lights up when she talks about it. (Maybe your big idea lights you up too 😉 )

So, she’s playing with the idea of starting a side hustle with her already steady stream of speaking gigs.

When we were talking and she asked, “How can I tell if this idea will work?”

“Great question,” I said. “The best way to test a big idea is when you still have money coming in, so the timing is right. And… there is a clear path I follow that will help us figure out if it will work in just a few weeks. All you need is to do these three things.”

Here’s what I shared with her…

3 Ways To Test Your Big Idea

See if you can spot a trend. Is there an increasing number of people talking about this big idea? Are experts speaking out or writing about it? Are there associations and groups forming with people who are trying to support each other in getting this “big idea” addressed?

Identify the gap that needs filling. What is the biggest challenge in getting this “big idea” solved? What’s working and what’s not working with solutions that are out there now? Is this a problem you want to solve? Is it a problem you are capable of solving?

Add up how much it’s worth. Jumping in and launching a “big idea” that solves a problem is only as good as the freedom, flexibility and surplus it can bring. Is this a big enough idea to solve? e.g. is it a multi-million dollar problem? Test your assumptions so you can be confident your big idea will work.

The good news is, there is a growing number of smart and successful women just like you who are passionate about doing more with their talents and resources.

Whether you are feeling burned out with what you are doing now, “aged out” of exciting opportunities, or your big idea fulfills a passion or mission… you owe it to yourself to test your big idea to see if it will work.

Women are working longer than every in history, yet age bias is real

Burnout is an official mental health syndrome and affects women at a rate higher than men.

The rate of women leaving companies to start their own businesses has increased more than 68% in the last five years.

Being your own boss closes the equality gap, enables you to get paid what you are worth and have the freedom to manage your own time. But even more important, launching your big idea enables you to follow your passion, impact others, and leave this world happy that you have had the courage to live by your ideals.

Good on you!

Big love,
